Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-03 09:Hi everyone this is my first thread so I hope I have posted to the right forum?A little history first - I am a 'noobie' to both guitar and Pod XT. I have bought a Gibson Les Paul Standard plus a Pod XT and play (learning to) Pod XT via my PC and headphones. I am old and very late in wanting to learn blues guitar (lesson there for others) and I would luv to play the late '60's 'Need your love so bad' by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.I have a grasp of the basic notes but sound wise I am knowhere close. Can anyone please help me with a sound patch?I have checked out Custon Tone and downloaded one Peter Green patch, but with respect it is not like Peter's sound.

I have tried to mimic myself but as I said I am very new to Pod so got nowhere close.I would appreciate all the help I can get to achieve my goal and I know it maybe difficult as Peter's Gibson LP was apparently set up incorrectly on the pick ups giving it an unique sound but hopefully later some of you PODXT technos would like a challenge to recreate a sound from 40 years ago?I have put a link below to 'you tube' where you can hear the true sound of Peter's guitar. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-03 09:Hey Tyto.Click on this link, and try the patch called 'Blues Clean', made by Rob Tognoni. Sweet sounding patch. Using your guitar, play with the 'gain', till you get just a hint of a slight breakup. I also keep the settings the same that Rob has, but switch the amp to the Plexi 45.

Just gives a differnet flavor to the patch. As far as the 'Peter Green Mod'.There's info on the net, which shows how to set up wiring with a switch, to reverse the phase of the neck pickup. I stayed away from this, because I didn't want to drill a hole in my LP, to mount the switch. So I did it the way Green's guitar is set up.After you remove the neck pickup, you'll need to loosen the four screws on the bottom of the pickup plate. Then.very carefully.slide the magnet out.( the magnet is located in the center of the pickup ). Gotta be gentle so you don't break it.!!!Once it's out.Turn the magnet 'around'.DON'T 'flip' it upside down. After you're ready to install the pickup back in, turn the pickup so the 'screw' poles are facing the bridge.Good luck to ya'.!! Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-03 12:Hi JohnMany thanks for your guide to a patch. I am on my now to download Rob Tognoni's tone.Good to hear I am not the only one with a love of Greeny's sound, but I am very very nervous about messing around with the pick up.

Still, it is a much better option than drilling any holes in my LP (1998 model), 'cos I like it's beauty too much to consider threatening it with my Black & Decker hand drill LOL.I'll let you know how I get oncheers Tyto. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-03 17:Hey Tyto,Just one thing I was wondering. You're a guitar newbie, ok? So you have the pickup selector on your Les Paul (it's the switch above the strings). If you turn it up, you'll get the neck pickups.

A fatter sound with more bass. If you use it on the middle position, you're gonna get both pickups splitted. You'll sound a little less fat. If you switch it down you're gonna have the bridge pickup which is the one with more treble. To get his sound, switch it down.Open up all the volume and tone knobs to 10 and try the patch John said. Did this helped?

If it improved a bit, you have 2 volume knobs. Turn to 0 the upper one and the lower knob leave on 10. How does that sound with that patch?Oh. And try downloading the patch again (with no changes), save it with another name and compare to the one you've been changing. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-04 03:Hi BirroMany thanks for your help. My pickup switch was set in the middle so I will set it to the down position and re-try the patch John kindly guided me to.

I will let you all know how I fare. The sound of the PodXTpatch was very good (before I altered it - perhaps not as good when I had finished messing it about LOL)Your mail really was a good help as I didnt know which pick up was being used when altering the switch position so it is a mystery solved for me.I see Toasterdude's mail regarding changing the phasing but I am afraid I am to nervous to begin playing about altering the phasing it case I bust it altogether. My LP is fitted with the original 1988 Bill Lawrence OHB-R4 pick ups so I am not sure if this will also affect the sound? Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-04 06:Tyto, if you are not confident, and don't have much experience, working with the electronics of an electric guitar, by all means, leave it be.

If you're dead set on getting that Green LP tone, take it to a qualified guitar tech in your area instead.Green used Fender Dual Showmans, Twin Reverbs, Marshalls, and Orange amps with Fleetwood Mac.Other than a guitar cord, the rest of the sound was him. He would alter his tones by changing pickups, adjusting his tone/volume knobs, and altering his right hand attack on the strings. All within the context, of one solo passage sometimes. He usually turned his amp volumes all the way up, and controlled how much grit he wanted, with his LP's volume knob, or how hard he hit the strings.Like I said before.Adjust the gain on that Tognoni patch, using your guitar, so that when you attack the strings hard, you'll get a nice break up.

Roll your volume knob down, and the tone will get cleaner. For now.Try forgetting about trying to get the exact same LP tone, as you're hearing on that recording.

Instead.Zero in on the little nuances of Greens playing instead. His attack, phrasing, and so on.The tone you're looking for, is gonna come from your hands.

Not some pickup modification.Take care my friend.!!!And good luck.!!! Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-04 11:Hi JohnYou're right. I will take it back to the basics and stay with the patch for now and work on the gain plus the technique side.Good idea the guitar tech bit as I dont have the nerve to mess with the LP. I will consider that step next year and in the meanwhile look for a suitable luthier. One question please - What do you mean when you say ' a nice break up'?Also - 'Adjust the gain on that Tognoni patch, using your guitar' - Do you mean the volume control on the guitar, or do you mean the gain control on Line 6?Sorry if these are dumb questions but I just want to make sure I undertand clearly how to best mod the soundMany thanks for your patience John. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-04 13: One question please - What do you mean when you say ' a nice break up'?That's 'technical talk.!!' It's a trade secret.!!! ( just kidding )That refers to how much 'distortion' the amp (patch) gives.

If you had the volume of a Twin Reverb on 5, the tone stays clean with hardly any distortion. By comparison, the volume on 5 using a Marshall amp, the distortion is much greater. 'Dire Straits' versus 'Gary Moore' is one way to look at it. Also - 'Adjust the gain on that Tognoni patch, using your guitar' - Do you mean the volume control on the guitar, or do you mean the gain control on Line 6?Both.Without touching the patch, and playing your LP, with the volume all the way up on your guitar, is the tone clean.?? Or is there any distortion.??

If it's clean, try turning the gain up on the patch, till you get a bit more distortion. Now when you start to play, you can get a cleaner tone by rolling down the volume on your LP.or.picking very softly. And then by rolling the volume up, you can get a dirtier tone. This how a lot of the blues players get their tones. By varying their picking attack, and how much volume from the guitar, they send to the amp.Hope this helps.!!! Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-04 21:I never heard of the guy. I dont really care for blues and dont think most of it contains any real amp tone. Its mostly just the guitar's sound amplified with a slight amount of distortionBut dude, that guy has a fantastic voice. Being a singer as well.I do love blues singing and thats a voice I could listen to all dayI believe he is on the bridge pickup, could be wrong, but I can get that sound from my Ibanez SA's second postion(uses half of the bridge humbucker and the middle sngle coil).

It a quack type soundThats what Im hearing there. So as long as you have that guitar type(or something like my SA), that has a slight quack sound, you should have no problem getting that tone. As I said.its a guitar sound way more than an amp sound(on this particular video). Many people ask about these sounds and they are simple to get if you understand its the guitar itself that causes it.Try robs patches or any medium gain model with low gain dialed in and turn those dials till you get the voicing to your liking.-and thanks for the video:). Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-05 03:hi John BlisterTipPleased you enjoyed the video. Peter was massive in the music world in the late 60's when illness overtook him, and from which he still suffers today. He was the co founder of Fleetwood Mac and if you look on You tube there are other songs from that period, featuring Peter on vocals, such as 'Man of the World' & 'Green Manalishi' both penned by Peter, and based upon his life experiences. Also look for 'Albatross' which is a beautiful instrumental by Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac as they were called at that time.

This was their first big hit which topped the UK charts if I recall correctlyCheers. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-05 09:The only way I know of, to get near the tone, on that video, is a guitar with two humbuckers. The pickup switch set to the middle position, and the neck pickup magnet, has been reversed.

( There are other ways, but this is the way Green's LP is set up ) A guitar set up this way, will give that quirky, nasally tone. This clip is my Les Paul, in the middle position, and the magnet to the neck pickup has been reversed. The patch is Rob Tognoni's 'Blues Clean'. The post compressor was turned off, and the amp is the 'Plexi 45', with the gain at 40%. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-05 11:Tyto,Thanks for the link. The one thing you have to keep in mind that on that particular song, he is using a Strat, and if I am not mistaken you are using a Gibson. The pickups are different, the Strat have single coils and the Gibson have Humbuckers. The tone will definately be different no matter what patch you use. You can always replace the pickups with some ones that can be coil tapped, but still, it won't be like the Strat sound but will be close. You might want to searching for Jimi Hendrix patches also.there tones seem a lot similar.not exact.just similar. Thanks again for the linkdog!

Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-05 14:Ahhhhhhh JohnThat was real MUSIC to my ears. Lets swop LP's eh?Seriously what a beautiful sound you have created and also what a talent, I am so jealous.Strangely mine sounds nothing like that at all (I wonder why, ahem) so I may have to reconsider the dabble with the magnet that I was postponing until next year.Plus my Xmas wish will be FOR the a little,or a lot, of magic to give me the skill to play half as good as you in the coming years.I hope this works as I am attaching the backing for Need Your Love So Bad. Please play the opening lead onto it and post it back when you're ready.Message was edited by: Tyto. Re: Pod XT Sound Model - Peter Greenby on 2007-12-06 09:Hey Tyto.Thank you for the kind words. Some of the players on this forum, make me want to put my guitars outside, to be collected on trash day. But I thank you, just the same.!!Nice backing track, you provided. There's nothing to overly difficult, with the intro, you're learning.

There is one bend, where he bends up a whole step and a half. That can be a little difficult, keeping the intonation, with a bend that wide. Other than that, he's just phrasing notes, out of the A major pentatonic. There's a guy named Jim Wagner, whose company is called 'WCR Pickups'. He makes some of the best pickups out there. All hand wound, by him.

He makes a set called the 'Moore/Green' set, which is right up your alley, for the Peter Green sound. They're not cheap. But I thought I'd mention it.Good luck to ya.!!!
